Introduction To The Course

السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ وَ رَحْمَةُ ﷲِ وَ بَرَكَاتُهُ and welcome to Arabic Language Mastery. The purpose of this site is to teach Arabic, with the primary aim of understanding the Quran directly when it is being recited.

Why this course was created

As Muslims, we believe that the Quran is the divine speech of Allah. It contains guidance for all of humanity, for the rest of time. We are obligated to recite it at least 5 times every single day, so that we may be reminded about our purpose and so we may have a constant source of guidance throughout the day, every day.

And yet, it is shocking how many Muslims have no idea what the Quran is saying. So many billions of Muslims go through all of the motions of prayer, without ever understanding anything that they are reciting. This is quite the tragedy, and our goal here is to try to make an easy, accessible, and effective resource which will allow Muslims to learn the language at their own pace. The end goal of this website is to teach the user the Arabic language principles, that will allow them to understand the Divine Speech as it is being recited.

There are many institutions now Alhamdulillah that are trying to change this, and we pray for all of their successes. Personally, as someone who still considers themselves a student of the language and is continually striving to learn more and get better, I found that many of the self-taught, and even the courses taught be teachers, were often quite dry and boring. I'd often find myself quitting a course part-way through, because it was just full of dry grammar, with disjointed examples such as how to say that I'm going to school, how many siblings I have etc. But I'd turn to the Quran and still not understand much of what I was reading.

Until I found a course taught by Mufti Yusuf Mullan called Shariah Program. Alhamdulillah that course changed my life and is the only course I have stuck through. It was engaging, and while I am only halfway through the course, I can understand massive sections of the Quran as I recite it. I would highly recommend anyone who can afford to do so, to check out the Shariah Program course. This course is heavily inspired by that one, with the aim of concentrating and condensing the material into more bitesize chunks. This course will also have a heavy emphasis on the student doing online exercises as practice, as well as being a text based resource that is easy to search and navigate (the Shariah Program delivery is mainly through videos with pdf transcripts available)

The Course Structure

The bulk of the Arabic language concepts will be taught through the book, Qasas-ul-Anbiyaa. This is a childrens book about the Stories of the Prophets. It contains a lot of Quranic vocabulary, as well as direct Aayaat from the Quran, and due to it being a book of stories, you will understand cohesive, structured, Arabic passages rather than learning disjointed Arabic examples, like how to say your name, and what your favourite food is. Learning the Arabic through an Arabic story book will be engaging, and inshaa Allah will keep your motivation levels high as you can see the language come to life and see directly your ability to understand and translate flawlessly. At the bottom of this page, I have included one chapter from the Qasas book to give you an idea of what it looks like, and to give you an idea what you will be reading and understanding.

The course starts off with two introductory modules that introduce some of the most important aspects of the language. These concepts are required before we can start the Qasas book. Once we reach the Qasas book, as we mentioned, the overwhelming bulk of teaching will be done through the book.

Lessons will have some sections to pay special attention to. We will have important notes:

Then we have normal notes:

We also have questions to make you think:

And almost all lessons will end with a Lesson Summary:

Our purpose in this course is to teach you the Arabic language concepts, it is not to teach you vocabulary. Vocabulary is something that you will be learning long after you graduate this course, as words take a lot of time to learn. With that said however, while it is not a primary objective for us to teach you lots of vocabulary, we do have a mechanism for teaching you Arabic words.

Whenever you see an Arabic word that looks like this: , that means you can hover over the word, or tap the screen if on a touchscreen, and it will give you the meaning of that word. However, bear in mind that Arabic words can have multiple different meanings sometimes. We will list either the most common, or some of the most common meanings of that word.

Conclusion and Qasas Passage

To get the most out of this course, try to tackle all exercises and questions. After studying each Qasas passage in detail, return to the passage and re-read the entire passage, aiming to understand the text directly without needing to analyse it in depth. This will take time so don't worry if it doesn't happen straight away, but going through that is essential to make the comprehension happen in real time. At the end of the day, we want to understand the Quran as it is being recited, not because we spend a few minutes analysing each aayah.

With all of that said, we pray that our journey to understand the Quran directly is made easy. Our purpose in this life is to worship Allah and to seek guidance in his book at least 5 times a day, every day, until we go back to Him. You will find below one of the longer chapters from the Qasas book to give you an idea of what you will be studying from, and what you will be able to understand as you progress through the course. Sentences in brackets are Aayaat from the Quran.
